Impress your outdoor companions with this ingenious campfire cooking method. This satisfying duo reaches new heights in the wilderness compared to your typical diner fare. Prepare it over a campfire, and not only will you awe your friends, but you’ll also enjoy a pot-free meal with minimal cleanup (eat directly from the bag!). Ensure the paper is damp before cooking to prevent ignition—bacon grease works wonders for this. While there might be a bit of smoke, the payoff is well worth it. Explore two techniques: one for the trailhead and one for the trail.

Car Camping

Ingredients:

  • 4 thick bacon slices
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 brown paper lunch bag

Instructions:

  1. Pack eggs and bacon in a cooler at home.
  2. In camp, cook one serving per bag. Place bacon inside the bag, generously wiping the insides with grease (more coating enhances the flavor). Crack eggs onto the bacon.
  3. Fold the bag down several times, then thread a three-foot stick (green pine to prevent burning) through it, allowing the bag to hang at one end.
  4. Hold the stick’s other end, suspending the bag over hot coals (not flames), heating all sides evenly until done (seven to 10 minutes).

Backpacking

Ingredients:

  • 4 frozen bacon slices
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 brown paper lunch bag

Instructions:

  1. Crack eggs into a bowl, beat, and pour into a Lexan bottle or zip-top bag to freeze at home.
  2. Wrap the frozen eggs (in bottle or bag) with foil and place them in your pack with the bacon. Both will thaw by breakfast the next day.
  3. Cook over your campfire using the method described above.
